Known since antiquity as labdanum, Cistus is the resinous exudate of the rockrose—a small, sun-loving shrub native to the Mediterranean. In ancient times, its sacred scent perfumed temples and incense rituals. The oleoresin was famously gathered by shepherds who combed it from the fleece of sheep that grazed among Cistus bushes. The Roman physician Dioscorides even wrote that it was collected from the beards and thighs of goats. Today, this small-batch hydrosol is artisan-distilled in copper alembics from Cistus ladanifer grown in the Resonance Garden—offering a liquid form of this ancient botanical’s presence and power.
